ACTIVITIES OF THE YEAR 2007-08
National Rural Health Mission
During the year the NSI took up issues of national importance and prepared a document on the National Rural Health Mission - Nutrition Component. The document was submitted to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Secretary, NSI had a detailed discussion with the Joint Secretary, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
IUNS-NSI-NIN International workshop
The International workshop on “Leadership skills in nutritional sciences” was jointly organized by the National institute of Nutrition, Indian Council of Medical research, Hyderabad, India, the Nutrition Society of India and the International Union of Nutrition Sciences on the 13th and 14th of November 2007, at the National Institute of Nutrition.
The main objectives of the workshop are:
- To inspire future leaders through personal examples and vignettes;
To give participants a greater understanding on the role of nutrition in development;
To provide them with knowledge of the competencies of leadership;
To highlight the importance of advocacy;
To provide a view to the newer skills necessary for successful cross cutting research, such as nutritional epidemiology and cellular and molecular nutrition;
To sensitize participants to the need for skilled leadership through the understanding of critical review;
To serve as a forum for networking and future collaboration
A total of 38 participants from various faculties ranging from clinical nutrition to medical science participated in the two-day workshop. The faculty consisted of twenty experts from a wide range of specialties, including the government, academia, corporate and management sectors. The workshop was spread over 6 sessions commencing with the inauguration session. Each session was followed by an interactive session. Opportunities were provided to the participants for one-on-one interaction with the faculty and interactions as groups of 2-3 participants with common concerns with respect to hindrances in research progress, to address these specific problems. The basis for assigning these groups were the responses in the pre-workshop questionnaire, which the participants were requested to fill in, in order to identify major concerns that were preventing from being successful researchers. Group activities were designed to increase interactions among participants and participants were asked to make individual presentations on their short – term and long – term goals. Group presentations dealt with the results of their assigned group activities and were presented on the second day during the concluding session. The workshop came to an end with the concluding session which included distribution of certificates to the participants. A post-workshop feedback questionnaire was also administered to enable better conduct of such workshops in future.
39th National Conference of Nutrition Society of India
The 39th National Conference of NSI was held at National Institute of Nutrition, Hyderabad on 15-16 November 2007 about 700 delegates and inviters attended the same. The conference was inaugurated by Prof. Ricardo Uauy, President, IUNS. At the outset, Dr. B. Sesikeran, Director, National Institute of Nutrition and Joint Secretary, NSI and Organizing Secretary, welcomed the delegates.
The Thirty First Gopalan Oration
The Thirty first Gopalan Oration was delivered by Prof. Ricardo Uauy, President, IUNS, Professor, Nutrition and Pediatrics, Institute of Nutrition and Food Technology, University of Chile, Chile and Public Health Nutrition, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, University of London, UK, on “Nutrition Challenges for the 21st Century: The double burden of disease”
The Nineteenth Srikantia Memorial Lecture
The Nineteenth Srikantia Memorial Lecture was delivered by Dr. V. Prakash, Director, Central Food Technological Research Institute, Mysore, on “Nutrition Links in the Food Chain”.

Awards for Research Papers
Award Session
A total of 24 papers consisting of 3 in Community Nutrition and 4 in Experimental Nutrition under the category Senior award and 9 in Community Nutrition and 8 in Experimental Nutrition under the category Junior award were presented. The following were selected for awards:
Senior Award in Community Nutrition
Dr. Vanisha Nambiar, Department of Foods and Nutrition, The Maharaja Sayaji Rao University of Baroda, Vadodara, for the paper entitled “Impact of antioxidants from drumstick leaves on the lipid profile of hyperlipidemics” by Vanisha Nambiar, Parul Guin, Shilpa Parnami and M. Daniel.
Senior Award in Experimental Nutrition
Ms. Sheetal Gupta, Department of Studies in Food Science and Nutrition, University of Mysore, Mysore, for the paper entitled “Antioxidant Components and Antioxidant Activity of Selected Vegetables” by Sheetal Gupta and Jamuna Prakash.
Junior Award in Community Nutrition
Ms. Deepti Khanna, Nutrition Foundation of India, New Delhi, for the paper entitled “Obesity in Delhi School Children and Adolescents” by Deepti Khanna, Sakshi Kapoor Bhushan and Prema Ramachandran.
Junior Award in Experimental Nutrition
This year, the Junior Award in Experimental Nutrition was given to the following two participants :
Mrs. Pratibha Dwarakanath, St. John’s Research Institute, St, John’s National Academy of Health Scences, Bangalore, for the paper entitled “Glucose kinetics in early and mid-pregnancy in low BMI Indian women” by Pratibha Dwarakanath, Muthayya S, Thomas T, Jahoor F, Mhaskar A, Thoma A, Mhaskar R, Kurpad AV.
Mrs. Sherill Alex, Department of Lipid Chemistry, National Institute of Nutrition, Hyderabad, for the paper entitled “Diverse effects of PUFAs on glucose intolerance, dyslipidemia and obesity in glucose intolerant obese rat model of WNIN-GR Ob strain” by Sheril Alex, Jeyakumar SM, Jayashree T, Giridharan NV and Vajreswari A.
Ramanathan Award
A total of 16 papers were presented in Oral Presentations Session. Keeping in view of the best presentations made in the Session, the Ramanathan Award was awarded this year to the following two participants :
Dr. Anura V Kurpad, St. John’s Research Institute , Bangalore, for the paper entitled “Is there a significant intestinal microbial contribution to essential amino acid homeostasis in humans? By Anura V Krupad, Tony Raj, R.Kishore, M.Vaz.
Ms. Anvita Kale, Interactive Research School for Health Affairs, Bharati Vidyapeeth, Pune for the paper titled “Essential polyunsaturated fatty acids and nerve growth factor levels in first episode schizophrenia” by Anvita Kale, Sadhana Joshi, Anil Kumar Pillai, Nilesh Naphde, MSVK Raju, Sahebarao Mahadik.
Best Poster Awards
A total of 122 posters were displayed in the disciplines of Community Nutrition, Clinical Nutrition, Experimental Nutrition Food Science and Nutrition Education and Communication. The NSI Prize for best presentation, in each category was awarded to a total of three participants this year, apart from Haveli Ram Pasricha Prize. The following are the awardees:

Miss Kejal Joshi et al., Department of Foods and Nutrition, the MS University of Baroda, Vadodara, for the paper entitled “Capacity Building of Salt Traders – A Community Perspective for Nutrition Breakthrough” by Kejal Joshi and Sirimavo Nair in the field of Nutrition Education and Communication.
Activities of local chapters
AJMER
A two-day Workshop on Development of Curriculum for UG, PG, M.Phil. and Diploma Courses related to Food and Nutrition was organized on 15th and 16th November 2006. Two Panel Discussions on “Nutritional status of women and children in India” and “Perspectives of women empowerment” were organized during September 2006.
BARODA
A workshop on “Managing Chronic Health Disorders” was organised by the Chapter in association with Faculty of Social Work and Indian Dietetic Association (Gujarat Chapter) on 24th December 2006. The Workshop was attended by over 100 participants. About 6 exhibitions were organised during the year.
BHUBANESWAR
A popular talk on “Current status of universal salt iodization programme in Orissa” was organised for ICDS and NGOs on 31st December 2006. A demonstration of estimating salt iodine content using rapid spot-test kits was also arranged. Over 50 persons attended the programme. Members of the Chapter attended a two-day symposium on “Tribal Health” held at the Regional Medical Research Centre for Tribals, Jabalpur, on 19-20 October 2006
CHANDIGARH
A special lecture on ‘Lactose intolerance in North Indians” was arranged on 31st May 2006. Some of the Members of the Chapter have participated in the International Meetings/Conferences. Two Members, viz., Mrs. Madhu Sharma and Mrs. Sunita Malhotra have received the best research paper awards at ISPEN 2006 and Annual Conference of the India Dietetic Association respectively..
COIMBATORE
The Coimbatore Chapter organised three Workshops on “Nutrition and Health Indicators of Women”, “Development of Self-Confidence” and “First Aid and Home Nursing” during the year. Over 200 persons have participated in each workshop. A series of special lectures (15) and 2 popular talks were organised by the Chapter.
DHARWARD
During the year, the Dharward Chapter organised seven Panel Discussions on topics like “Diabetes and Nutrition”, “Malnutrition problem in Children”, “Supplementary diets for children” etc. In addition, 5 popular talks and four radio talks were delivered during the period. The members of the Chapter participated in 10 Workshops organised by various agencies during the year.
GULBARGA
The Gulbarga Chapter has organised a number of activities during the year, which included lecture-cum-demonstrations, film and slide shows, popular lectures, Workshop and Exhibitions.
INDORE
During the year, the Chapter organised a Workshop on “Correct practices of Breastfeeding” on 3rd August 2006 at Government NGPG College, Indore, which was attended by over 150 persons. Two symposia on “Anaemia in Young Girls” and “Radiation Friendly” were organised during the months of September and November 2006 respectively. A series of special/popular lectures were organised.
KOLKATA
A special lecture on “Pathogenesis of polycystic ovary syndrome with special reference to insulin resistance” was organised on 19th June 2007. As part of the National Nutrition Week, a discussion was arranged on “Transmission of basic nutrition to the common people and its remedial measures”.
LUCKNOW
During the year, the Lucknow Chapter organised three Workshops viz., (1) National Iodine Deficiency Disorder Control Programme – The Present Situation of Iodised Salt (2) Mission Poshan addressing under Nutrition in Children in UP, and (3) Rapid assessment of essential newborn care services and need in the NRHM priority State of India. Additionally, two symposia, three special lectures and a panel discussion were organised.
LUDHIANA
Three Workshops on “Bakery and Confectionery” by experts from Netherlands were conducted for students, Home Science faculty members of Punjab Agricultural University, from 12th to 27th October 2006.
MALABAR
During the year, three Workshops on “Nutrition and Cancer”, “Infant Feeding” and “Adolescent Nutrition” were organised. Over 50 participants attended these Workshops. A symposium on “Dietary management of acute diarrhoeal diseases” was organised during the month of August 2006.
MADURAI
As part of the extension activities, the Madurai Chapter has delivered about 8 popular talks. The members of the Chapter delivered five special lectures organised by outside agencies.
MYSORE
As part of the National Nutrition Week Celebrations, the Mysore Chapter arranged demonstrations, drawing/essay competitions. Two special lectures on “Nutrition in Health” and “Malnutrition” were organised.
NAGPUR
Two Workshops on “Gender Equivity Sensitization” and “Low cost fuel saving household gadgets” were organised during the months of September and November 2006 respectively. Over 60 participants attended the Workshops. A Symposium on “Importance of vocational education as income generation activity” was organised. Over 75 persons have attended the same. A number of special lectures were delivered during the year.
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM
A Symposium on “Paediatric Nutrition and Adolescent Care” was organised during the month of April 2006. Over 100 participants have attended the same.
